Telkom planning more mergers, acquisitions

Telkom told unions on 25 April 2014 that it will embark on mergers, acquisitions, partnerships or consolidation in the future.

The operator said that the network sharing agreement with MTN is good example of the deals which it is embarking on.

In March 2014, Telkom announced a network sharing agreement with MTN, in which MTN will take over financial and operational responsibility for the rollout and operation of Telkom’s radio access network (RAN).

MTN told analysts that the infrastructure deal will take 3 to 4 months to conclude, which will hold great benefits for both companies.

MTN said that it does not expect the deal to require regulatory approval, but it expects some resistance from industry participants, depending on the terms of the final deal.

Telkom was contacted for further comment on its planned mergers, acquisitions and partnerships, but the company said that it currently has no update on the issue.
