Telkom responds to Maseko number plate cloning allegations

Sipho Maseko

The Star reported on 25 July 2014 that Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko is at the centre of a City of Johannesburg metro police (JMPD) investigation into a car licence cloning scandal.

The newspaper reported that Maseko “stands accused of running up about R30 000 in traffic fines – to be paid by another driver”.

According to businessman Mabena Motshoane he spotted his cloned number plates on a black Range Rover, belonging to Maseko. He said that Maseko ran up about R30 000 in traffic fines using the cloned number plates.

“Whatever is happening in terms of allegations about him [Maseko] being on the wrong side of the law is being investigated by the Johannesburg metro police department (JMPD),” said city spokesman Nthatisi Modingoane.

Telkom has now responded to queries about the issue, saying that it is a matter “that is personal to Mr Maseko and is in no way related to Telkom”. “As such, Maseko will deal with it in his personal capacity,” said Telkom.

Telkom added that it is aware that Maseko has presented himself to the authorities and that he is committed to resolving the issue within the ambit of the law.

“Telkom trusts that he will continue to work with the relevant authorities until the matter is resolved and therefore has no further comment on this matter,” Telkom said.
