Computer shipments grow by 27 percent
“The stronger-than-expected growth was led by a robust recovery in the Europe, Middle East and Africa PC market, which grew 24.8 percent in the first quarter of 2010,” said Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner. “All other regions recorded double-digit growth rates, although the US and Latin America were slightly lower than what we had expected.”
Shipments in the Asia-Pacific region grew 37 per cent to 26.5 million units, while in Latin America, sales increased by 35.4 per cent to 7.2 million units, the report said.
“These first quarter results indicate that the professional PC market is gradually picking up, driven by PC replacements in mature markets,” said Kitagawa, who expected growth to continue this year and next.
HP continued to be the leader in worldwide PC shipments with 18.2 per cent market share, followed by Acer with 14.2 per cent, Dell with 12.1 per cent, Lenovo with 8.3 per cent and Asus with 5.5 per cent. The Asian manufacturers all displayed stronger growth than the market leader, with growth rates between 54 per cent and 115 per cent, compared to HP’s growth of 20 per cent.
