How much should you earn?

The results of the 2009 IT Salary Survey conducted by IT Web were released recently, and one of the components which were investigated is the salary levels of IT professionals according to seniority and experience.

Unsurprisingly the results showed that both experience and seniority in an organization have a significant influence on salary, with experienced executives earning around six times as much as inexperienced ‘normal’ employees.

The following table provides an overview of the salary packages of IT professionals according to professional level and experience.

Years of Experience
Professional Level 0 – 2 Years 3 – 5 Years 6 – 10 Years >10 Years
Executive Manager / Director R300,000 R570,000 R585,000 R777,000
IT Technical R216,000 R276,000 R400,000 R535,000
Operational Manager R240,000 R252,000 R360,000 R510,500
Staff R139,000 R216,000 R344,343 R450,000

Various factors other than seniority and experience also influence salary levels, including qualifications, the industry which an employee works in, gender and company size.

One of the interesting statistics is that IT professionals in Gauteng typically earn nearly twice as much as their counterparts in Limpopo province.

The following table provides some indication of IT salary levels in the nine provinces in South Africa.
