Sentech acting CEO resigns
Sentech has been the problem child of the local telecoms space – not only for its poor performance but also for wasting some of the most valuable spectrum available in the wireless telecommunications arena.
Government has stepped in to try and save the embattled state owned telecoms operator after a task team report stated that Sentech was “rudderless, inadequately funded and misdirected” and was an unsustainable business.
While the report did not explicitly recommend axing its chief executive officer and board, former Sentech CEO Sebiletso Mokone-Matabane resigned earlier this year, long before the end of her contract in September. Numerous changes to the Sentech board were also made.
Sentech’s Chief Operating Officer Beverly Ngwenya was named as Sentech’s new acting CEO in March, but less than four months later Ngwenya resigned amidst allegations ranging from gross negligence to reckless spending.
The Sunday Times reported today that Ngwenya resigned this week after “disciplinary charges – ranging from gross negligence to reckless spending – against her and the parastatal’s chief financial officer, Mohammed Cassim”.
According to the report Cassim will fight the charges in a hearing which starts tomorrow.
