StarSat to retrench staff

StarSat, formerly TopTV, will retrench staff – following the handing out of section 189 notices to employees. This is according to a report in the Sunday Times.
The pay-TV operator said “difficult economic circumstances” are affecting its operations, and various methods to cut costs and increase revenue have been considered.
“The stage has now been reached where other, more drastic measures have to be considered, which will mean that some people will be affected,” said StarSat CEO Mike Dearham in a company letter.
Dearham said the board was investigating possible solutions, but StarSat needed to “stabilise the financial position” of the business.
News of the retrenchments follows StarSat’s parent company On Digital Media going into business rescue in 2012, and an application to Icasa by the company for its network licence to be transferred to StarTimes Media SA.
The ruling is expected to be made by the end of September.
The full report is available in the Sunday Times – 20 September 2015 edition.
