What it takes to get a job at Google South Africa

Google is one of the most desirable places to work globally, and was ranked as the top employer in North America in LinkedIn’s 2015 InDemand list.

While Google is an excellent employer, it has a reputation for employing only the smartest people and having a stringent interview process.

MyBroadband asked Google South Africa what it takes to land a job at the company, and what the interview process looks like.

Google’s local office said they are looking for people who are great at a lot of things, love big challenges, and welcome big changes.

“We look for people who are good for Google – and not just for right now, but for the long term,” said Google South Africa.

“We’re less interested in your marks and more interested in your attitude.”

Interviewers will look for evidence that you’re a leader who is self-motivated and can get in there and get things done.

Google South Africa’s interview process

Getting hired by Google is a simple process, but there is a long interview cycle.

“Getting a job with us generally means going through 4 or 5 interviews, starting with a recruiter, and from there to telephonic and face-to-face interviews with the people you’ll be working for and with,” said Google.

Google is looking for “the kind of person who wakes up in the morning and decides how they want their day to go, and makes it happen”.

Google is looking for evidence that the person can perform the duties associated with their role – so if you’re applying to be an engineer, expect a test or two.

“We look for people who can solve problems, make decisions, and work in a team. We also look for ‘Googleyness’, what makes you, well, you, and determines whether you’ll fit in with us.”

“By the time you get to the interview process it’ll already be pretty clear that you’re qualified or you’d not be interviewed, so by then it’s really about whether you’ll fit into the culture.”

If all of the interviewers agree that the applicant is right for Google, they will get the job.
