The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa recently ruled that a Takealot Daily Deals discount was not a true reflection of the discount offered.
Takealot said it used the recommended retail prices given to it by suppliers at the time it listed the goods as the original price from which the discount is calculated.
However, the recommended retail price – in this case, R1,899 for an SSD – was significantly more than the normal price – R1,599 – for the product on Takealot’s website.
The complainant felt he was hoodwinked by Takealot, as the claimed Daily Deal discount on the new price of R1,399 was really 12.5%, and not the 26% which was advertised.
