Calls for after-hours work email ban

Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson has welcomed a French labour reform bill which will ban work emails out of working hours.

The bill suggests that companies of 50 or more employees should draft formal policies to limit sending and receiving of emails after hours – typically in the evening and over weekends.

Hansson said the ever-expanding expectations for when someone is available have got out of hand.

“Work emails are ticking in at all sorts of odd hours and plenty of businesses are dysfunctional enough to believe they have a right to have those answered, whatever the hour. That’s unhealthy, possibly even exploitative,” he said.

Hansson said stress from unrealistic and unhealthy expectations and work habits is a hazard to health and sanity.
