Takealot discounts explained

A consumer recently lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) against Takelot for a list price and linked discount appearing on its website.

Takealot was promoting the “Pampers Premium Care Nappies, Size 5, Mega Pack (88 count)” product for R349.

The website listed the original price as R429. In the top left-hand corner of the product page, a blue square contained the claim “18% Off”.

The consumer said he had been buying these nappies for a year, and they have never cost R429 as suggested.

Takealot explained that the saving reflected in its email newsletter and on the website was the difference between the current selling price and the recommended retail price.

The recommended retail price is provided by the supplier at the time of listing the product on the website.

“Where the supplier has not provided a recommended retail price, an estimate may be provided,” said Takealot.

Takelot added that the product was advertised by Pick ‘n Pay and Game on their respective websites for R439.99.

The ASA was happy with Takealot’s explanation, and dismissed the complaint.
