Naspers is a global powerhouse in the Internet and entertainment space, and invests large amounts in tech companies globally.

The company was founded in 1915 as the “Afrikaner Nasionale Pers” and has transformed into a modern tech player.

Among Naspers’ most profitable investments are Tencent and MultiChoice, which owns DStv.

The Tencent investment helped grow Naspers into the most valuable company in South Africa, with a market capitalisation of over R1.1 trillion.

While the company was founded as a publishing house, its principal operations are now in Internet companies – including ecommerce properties.

Naspers also established a ventures team in the US in 2016 to explore growth and investment opportunities, with a focus on mobile services.

Its recent investments include acquiring a controlling stake in Takealot for approximately R960 million, and growing its streaming service ShowMax.
