Samsung overtakes Intel as world’s biggest chipmaker

Samsung has released its second quarterly earnings report, which showed a record profit of $12.6 billion and a total of $54 billion in revenue.

The earnings report also revealed that of the company’s total revenue, $15 billion was generated by Samsung Semiconductors – making it the largest chipmaker in the world.

According to Intel’s second quarter earnings report, the company brought in revenue of $14.8 billion, slightly below that of Samsung’s semiconductor manufacturing division.

Both Samsung and Intel create processors for use in a variety of devices, and both companies also manufacture flash memory for solid state drives.
