Lord of the Rings TV series on the cards

Variety has reported that Amazon Studios is in talks with Warner Bros and the J.R.R. Tolkien estate about creating a Lord of the Rings TV series.

Variety said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is personally involved in the negotiations.

According to Deadline, the Lord of the Rings TV series is expected to dwarf any TV series to date – with the TV rights alone expected to be $250 million.

“On top of that, the budget for a fantasy series of that magnitude is likely to be $150 million a season,” said Deadline.

Amazon is not the only player looking at a Lord of the Rings TV series, however.

Deadline said Amazon, Netflix, and HBO have been approached about the project, but Amazon is reportedly the front runner to get the rights.
