Amazon isn’t leaving China

Amazon has disputed a report from Reuters that it sold its web services unit in China to Beijing Sinnet Technology.

“No, AWS did not sell its business in China and remains fully committed to ensuring Chinese customers continue to receive AWS’s cloud services,” Amazon told MyBroadband.

To comply with Chinese legislation, however, Amazon sold certain physical infrastructure to its local partner.

“Chinese law forbids non-Chinese companies from owning or operating certain technology for the provision of cloud services. AWS sold certain physical infrastructure assets to Sinnet,” it said.

Amazon said AWS continues to own the intellectual property for Amazon Web Services worldwide.

“‎We’re excited about the significant business we have in China and its growth potential.”
