TV and smartphone sales surged on Black Friday

The week of Black Friday 2017 saw massive increases in electronics sales across the country, according to data collected by GfK South Africa.

TVs and smartphones were especially popular, with TV sales growing 47% and smartphone sales climbing 63% compared to the same period last year.

The value of TVs sold during the week was 41% higher than the same week in 2016, while the value of smartphone sales rose by 34%.

Traditional retailers claimed the majority of Black Friday sales, accounting for 98.3% of TVs and 98% of smartphones sold during the week.

“This was the strongest Black Friday to date for consumer electronic sales in South Africa and it confirms that this US-imported sales frenzy is now a massive day in the annual retail calendar,” said GfK South Africa.

“We have seen similar Black Friday trends unfold in South Africa to those observed in markets such as the UK – including the event stretching into a week-long festival of specials and promotions,” the company said.
