Best-paying tech jobs in South Africa
The best-paying tech jobs in South Africa carry average salaries of between R40,000 and R90,000 per month, with roles in the Information Technology (IT) sector dominating the top 20 best-paying jobs in the country.
This is according to CareerJunction’s Employment Insights report for October 2023, which also revealed that hiring activity in the IT sector declined by approximately 2% over the past three months compared to the three months prior.
CareerJunction’s Employment Insights report provides an overview of the supply and demand trends in South Africa’s online job market.
The report is based on data collected from around 5,000 of the country’s most prominent recruiters.
CareerJunction’s list of the 20 best-paying jobs in South Africa features seven roles in the IT sector — the most of any sector mentioned in the list — with the best-paying position being “Technical / Business Architecture”.
The average salary for the role, on a cost-to-company basis, ranges from R65,000 to R90,000 per month. It achieved second place for the best-paying jobs over the past year.
The “Technical / Business Architecture” position was beaten only by Executive Management and Director roles, which pay between R91,667 and R125,000 per month.
The best-paying IT and engineering jobs in South Africa over the past year were as follows:

- Consulting Engineering — R43,204 to R70,833
- Mechanical Engineering — R33,333 to R66,667
- Civil / Structural Engineering — R41,667 to R65,833
- Database Design / Development / Administration — R45,000 to R65,000
- IT Project Administration / Management — R50,000 to R60,000
- Business Analysis — R41,667 to R60,000
- Software Development — R40,000 to R60,000
- Data Analysis / Data Warehousing — R40,000 to R60,000
- Engineering Technician — R37,500 to R52,083
- Systems Analysis — R40,000 to R50,000
- Electrical Engineering — R30,000 to R50,000
CareerJunction lists the Information Technology, and Architecture & Engineering sectors in South Africa as the second and third best-paying in the country.
Despite a notable increase in hiring activity across all sectors in August 2023, recruitment declined by 13% in September, and year-on-year, hiring activity is down 12%.
Hiring activity in the IT sector, while not as severely impacted, also took a hit, with CareerJunction reporting a decline of 2%.
In the sector, IT Project Administration and Management roles were hardest hit.
Being the economic hub of South Africa, companies in Gauteng contribute the most to recruitment, with the province accounting for 52% of hiring activity in the country.
The Western Cape contributes the next most, with the province being responsible for 22% of recruitment in South Africa. KwaZulu-Natal is third on 10%.
CareerJunction noted that International recruitment from South Africa declined during October 2023.
