Most in-demand tech skills in South Africa and how much they pay

Software development, database design, systems analysis, data analysis, and data warehousing skills are among the most needed in South Africa.

This is according to CareerJunction’s Employment Insights report for November 2023, which shows that hiring activity in the information technology sector has declined by 6% over the past three months.

CareerJunction’s Employment Insights report provides an overview of the supply and demand trends in South Africa’s online job market.

The report is based on data from the Stepstone Group’s South African platforms, where approximately 5,000 of the country’s top recruiters advertise available positions.

“Although hiring activity increased for Admin, Office & Support and IT professionals over the past month, over the last three months hiring slowed down,” it said in its report.

“When comparing hiring activity over the last three months (August, September, October 2023) with the previous three months (May, June, July 2023), there is a decline in recruitment for Admin, Office & Support, Information Technology and
Business & Management professionals.”

The company highlighted severe skills shortages in South Africa, with several information technology skills being highly sought-after in the country.

“When looking at specific types of professionals in high demand, IT professionals remain at the top in terms of scarce talent in South Africa,” it said.

“CareerJunction analysed the latest recruitment trends over the last six months to investigate the latest professions that are in highest demand with limited or scarce talent pools.”

These include IT professionals in software development, technical/business architecture, database design/development/administration, systems analysis, data analysis/warehousing, and business analysis.

CareerJunction also provided average salary ranges for roles that require these skills:

  • Software development — R40,000 to R60,000 per month
  • Technical/Business architecture — R65,000 to R90,000 per month
  • Database design/development/administration — R45,000 to R65,000 per month
  • Systems analysis — R40,000 to R50,000 per month
  • Data analysis/warehousing — R40,000 to R60,000 per month
  • Business analysis — R41,667 to R60,000 per month

CareerJunction provided insight into the level of demand for each skill by province, categorising them as very high, high, medium, low, very low, or hardly any demand.

Software development professionals are in very high demand in Gauteng and the Western Cape, while demand is slightly lower but still high in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

Similarly, data analysis, data warehousing, and business analysis skills are also in very high demand in Gauteng. However, demand is lower in the Western Cape and more so in KwaZulu-Natal.

Technical and business architecture professionals are in high demand in Gauteng and medium demand in the Western Cape.

A similar trend is observed for database design, development and administration skills, and systems analysts.
