Back to work for Vodacom

Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub has ordered senior staff to return to the office, ending the company’s blanket hybrid work-from-home policies.

Like most companies that could operate remotely during the Covid–19 pandemic, Vodacom allowed employees to continue working from home even as lockdown restrictions relaxed.

Until recently, Vodacom let all employees work from home twice a week, where their jobs allowed.

“We can confirm that Vodacom South Africa has taken the decision that all senior managers and People Leaders are required to use the office as their primary place of work and be in the office on all workdays,” a spokesperson told MyBroadband.

“This move has been necessitated by the prevailing complex business environment caused by various micro and macro-economic challenges.”

Vodacom said its business environment requires fully present and accessible leadership to steer the organisation in the right direction.

“Therefore, in our view, by being on-site, leaders can collaborate more effectively and ensure issues are resolved timely for our customers,” the spokesperson told MyBroadband.

“[Being back at the office] also means opportunities are executed at pace and [leaders] steer the business to new levels of success.”

Vodacom said that all other employees may continue working from home twice per week as part of its hybrid working policy.

This still excludes specific roles where workers must be physically present to do their jobs.

“The goal is to strike the right balance between flexibility and collaboration while keeping staff members’ well-being in mind,” Vodacom stated.
