The super app that crushed Black Friday 2024

Avo SuperShop — the super app run by Nedbank — enjoyed a bumper Black Friday 2024.

The Avo app was launched in 2020 and was positioned as a central location for Nedbank clients to access online shopping deals, essential services, and financial products.

After launching during the pandemic, the app has seen consistent and major growth throughout the past four years.

This growth continued during Black Friday 2024, as Nedbank Avo told MyBroadband that transactions on its platform increased by 100% year-on-year in terms of rand value and the number of orders processed.

According to Avo SuperShop, a key reason behind the app’s success during Black Friday is its commitment to launching new features and products.

That includes the recently launched Avo EasyTerms product, which provides financing options for cash-strapped customers who want to take advantage of a deal.

EasyTerms is available to qualifying Nedbank clients and allows them to buy select devices and electronic goods on the Avo SuperShop app with up to 36 months to pay — interest-free.

“Recent Nedbank research revealed that many South Africans have reservations about using credit for online purchases,” said Vishal Maharaj, Nedbank Division Executive for Beyond Banking and Infrastructure & Operations.

“By eliminating many of the barriers to credit that South Africans typically face, Avo is making high-quality products more accessible to a broader range of consumers.”

The super app also launched AvoCare — a free device protection plan for select Apple and Samsung devices when purchased on Avo Supershop.

Alongside these new offerings, Avo SuperShop said it frequently engages and collaborates extensively with its suppliers to “put forward credible deals” — and this “enables trust with consumers.”

Avo SuperShop said that taking this customer-first approach was a critical driver behind its Black Friday success — and something the industry as a whole should replicate.

“Keeping to the fulfilment of promises or even exceeding them will keep the [Black Friday] momentum going,” said an Avo SuperShop spokesperson.

Key trends

Avo SuperShop told MyBroadband that the most popular products on its platform this Black Friday were devices from brands like Apple and Samsung.

“Consumers on Avo SuperShop really took advantage of the best in market pricing on Apple and Samsung devices, especially the deeper discounts for Nedbank Greenbacks members,” said Avo SuperShop.

Consumer interest in these deals was boosted by the availability of the new AvoCare product, as well as the fact that Avo SuperShop ran deals throughout November — not only on Black Friday.

“As such, we saw sales ramping up towards Black Friday,” it said.

“Customers were happy to make early purchases and not wait for Black Friday.”
