SA-based projects funded on Kickstarter
A number of South Africans and entrepreneurs that wanted to do a project in South Africa managed to successfully fund their ideas using Kickstarter during 2012.
Kickstarter is a website that lets its users “crowdsource” funding for their projects from other users.
The site infamously only provides lists of successful projects, and four South African cities are listed on the site as places tagged in successfully funded projects.
In 2012, one successfully funded project had located itself in Durban, Cape Town had 7 funded projects, and Johannesburg had 3. Pretoria is also listed, but 2010 was the last time it saw a successfully funded project.
The SA-based projects listed as successfully funded by Kickstarter during 2012 are as follows:
UN Climate Negotiations film-makers
Help Make Epic Movies from the UN Climate Negotiations
A group of 8 young people consisting of videographers, photographers, writers and producers crowdsourced enough money to complete their work on the UN Climate Negotiations that were held in Durban.
None of the team hailed from South Africa, however, with people from Kenya, India, the Netherlands, and the United States.
The project was successfully funded on 10 January 2012.
Folk Told Me: Audio/Visual G
On 18 March 2012 Jazzmen Lee-johnson, a New Yorker, successfully raised the money he asked for to “conceive/compose/record” a concept album with the Johannesburg-based band “Folk Told Me”.
He described their sound as “a combination of black folk/indigenous music mixed with hip-hop, rock, electronica and jazz.”
Abalimi
Abalimi
Film-makers that lived in Cape Town for two years before moving on to Brooklyn, New York successfully funded their project, Abalimi, on 27 April 2012.
Abalimi, which the film-makers say is a word meaning “farmers”, is described as “a film about Xhosa women in the townships of South Africa micro-farming to fight extreme poverty, gain health, and create food security.”

Rhodes graduate Amirah Tajdin successfully funded her film concept on 12 May 2012.
The film is to be shot on location in Cape Town and features Leila, who is forced to come to terms with an intricate racial tapestry of family and a new-found romance.
Voices of Yabonga

25 South African kids (from the townships of Gugulethu and Lower Crossroads near Cape Town), 12 songs, 4 college students (from the US), all working together to produce 1 CD.
Voices of Yabonga was successfully funded on 12 May 2012.

Restorative Justice: Rehabilitating South Africa’s Youth
Another project about South Africa by a foreigner, Meg Daniels’ project was successfully funded on 13 May 2012 and will document how South Africa’s School of Hope uses restorative justice to rehabilitate society’s vulnerable youth.

POSTICK – Adhesive labels that convert things into postcards
Tatjan Buisson from Cape Town successfully funded her idea to turn “all sorts of things” into postcards on 19 June 2012.
HIV Research in South Africa
HIV Research in South Africa
Duduzile Phindi Mashinini, a South African educated in the USA, successfully funded her Kickstarter project on 20 June 2012.
She explained that the project is an extension of a former accomplished and published project researching HIV risk among Black teachers in South Africa.
Gummie
GUMMIE: first urban magazine in Johannesburg, South Africa
Russian journalist Ksenia Mardina landed up in Johannesburg and decided she wanted to stay on and start up an urban magazine for the city called Gummie, which was successfully funded on 29 July 2012.
She describes it as an online magazine about people, places and events in the “Gotham City of Africa.”
At the time of writing the website still said “Coming in 2012”.
A photograph from Hunters
“Hunters” a photography art book by David Chancellor
David Chancellor, who was born in England and now lives in Venice, California, successfully funded his “Hunters” photography book on 10 September 2012.
According to Chancellor, the book explores “the complex relationship that man has with animal in sub-Saharan Africa, through the eyes of the tourist trophy hunter.”
Rollaball
ROLLABALL – skate soccer!
Eddie Edwards, Steven Markovitz, Shelley Barry, and Stephen Cheifitz successfully funded their project on 22 September 2012 to make a film about skate soccer – a sport played by sufferers of polio in Accra, Ghana.
The project is listed under Johannesburg, South Africa on Kickstarter and involves South Africans.
