Who wants to call Alaska anyway?

MTN is now offering a 99c per minute call rate to Alaska following an Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA) complaint.
An MTN advertisement stated “Call the UK, USA, Portugal, China, India & Bangladesh for 99c per minute.”
However, MTN’s website indicated that Alaska was regarded as separate from the USA, and charged a rate of R2.49 per minute.
One consumer lodged a complaint with the ASA, and MTN was quick to admit the mistake and fix the problem.
MTN said that an internal system error had occurred which excluded Alaska from the 99c rate and resulted in customers being charged R2.49.
“The system error has since been rectified, and as of 8 June 2014, calls to Alaska will be billed at 99c per minute,” MTN said.
