New iPhone on the horizon
According to MacRumours, the new iPhone has been spotted by PinchMedia, a mobile application analytics firm. PinchMedia reported customers’ application usage to developers by giving the internal device model numbers used by Apple. The iPhone 3,1 was identified in November, utilising the iBART application.
A change in the first digit of the identifier number usually indicates a significant hardware change. The original iPhone is identified as 1,1. The iPhone 3G, a small upgrade from the original, was identified as the 1,2. The iPhone 3GS which saw major component upgrades, carries the 2,1 identifier.
References to the iPhone 3,1 were first discovered in firmware files in August and the apparent ‘field testing’ of the new device could mean that it is one step closer to becoming an official Apple product.
A similar pattern emerged before the release of the iPhone 3GS, which was identified 8 months before its official launch. According to MacRumours, the new device may sport a multi-core processor, and be ready for launch on the Verizon network by mid 2010.
