Firefox mobile browser "days away"

Browser development company Mozilla has revealed to the BBC today that a mobile version of its Firefox browser is now just “days away” from launch.

The program is currently undergoing final testing and could be released before the end of 2009, Jay Sullivan of Mozilla told the BBC, adding that the open source browser will be able to sync with the desktop version.

“At the end of the working day you can walk away from your computer and keep on going on your phone,” said Sullivan, revealing that “it encrypts all of the information and sends it back through the cloud between your desktop and mobile.”

Initially Firefox mobile will only be available on Nokia’s incoming N900 smartphone, which is based on Debian Linux. Despite this developers are working on versions for Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and Google’s Android mobile operating systems.

It will however be some time before Apple users will be able to access the mobile browser on their iPhones says Sullivan.

“Apple is very restrictive. As it’s a pretty closed platform we don’t see that happening soon.”

Firefox has shown considerable growth in 2009. It’s most recent desktop version, Firefox 3.5, is now the most popular browser in the world with 21.93% of global market share, overtaking Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for the first time.
