Pocket-size wireless Wi-Fi gateway from MTN

The MTN Pocket Gateway has a battery life of 4 hours and it can connect 5 users simultaneously with a download link of up to 7.2Mbps and an upload link of up to 5.76Mbps. The device is also bundled with a portable charger.

“It’s exciting to see more and more South Africans moving toward a connected lifestyle,” says Karel Pienaar, Managing Director of MTN South Africa.

The MTN Pocket Gateway is available free of charge on MTN data price plans.

This device will compete directly against Vodacom’s Vodafone branded MiFi device.  The MiFi pocket device is essentially a wireless router, roughly the size of a credit card, that is also a mobile Wi-Fi hotspots.

The MiFi router is produced by Novatel Wireless, and is priced at around R2500 locally.  It is available at many Vodashops countrywide.

Both these devices are likely to enjoy increased attention after Apple launched their iPad which only has Wi-Fi connectivity.  A 3G version of the iPad was however launched recently, and both Vodacom and MTN are set to launch micro SIMs to serve the iPad community.

MTN was asked for details about the pricing of their MTN Pocket Gateway and images of the device, but the cellular provider was unable to provide any details by the time of publication.
