MTN and Vodacom are battling it out for market share in the South African mobile telecoms environment, and a slew of special offers have emerged from these two companies to attract new customers.
In its latest development MTN extended its MTN Zone 100% Mahala offer where subscribers may qualify for discounts of up to 100% on calls and SMSs. The new 100% Mahala offer is valid until 31 July 2010.
The MTN Zone 100% Mahala promotion extension may be in response to Vodacom Extra Time promotion where Vodacom Prepaid customers will get Extra Time to talk to family and friends on the Vodacom network for free.
With Vodacom’s Extra Time offer prepaid customers are charged standard Vodacom-to-Vodacom call rates for the first 2 minutes and then at no cost for up to 4 minutes.
These are however not the only promotional deals available to mobile subscribers. Vodacom is advertising its ‘Deal of all Deals’, offering consumers a Samsung Star S5233 mobile phone with 120 free off-peak minutes for R79 per month on a 24 month contract.
Vodacom and MTN have also reduced the price of mobile broadband offerings recently. Mobile broadband is a growing revenue stream for both Vodacom and MTN and the new kids on the block – Telkom Mobile and Cell C have taken note of this.
Telkom Mobile is beefing up its mobile presence and Cell C rolling out an HSPA+ network which has spurred the two largest mobile players to make the most of their ‘duopoly’ by aggressively pursuing new sign ups.
