Vodacom’s R400 smartphone
Vodacom is planning to launch its cheapest smartphone yet – the ZTE Vodafone 546 (Laurence). The device features a full Qwerty keypad, a 2.2’’ display, a 2 Megapixel display, an FM radio and Micro-SD card support.
The Vodafone 546 has a 2.2 inch color graphical display with TFT technology, with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels.
The device supports GPRS and EDGE connectivity, and comes standard with flight mode and conference call capabilities. It also comes with Bluetooth 2.1 and WAP.
The most attractive part of the new smartphone is however not its features or build quality – which is understandably not the same as high-end phones – but rather its price.
At R400 it is far cheaper than any other smartphone on the market – and with a touchscreen version which should retail for between R500 and R600 – more consumers than ever can have access to smartphones.
According to Vodacom they expect prices to some down by another 25% within the next twelve months, making the Vodafone 546 even more affordable to South Africans.
