WhatsApp voice calling a hit on Cell C
WhatsApp voice calling is a big hit on Cell C’s network, and the company is welcoming its popularity among subscribers.
Cell C said that during the week of 13-19 July, about 1 million customers used WhatsApp calling.
“Cell C monitors the usage of WhatsApp on a daily basis as this is one of the key value-added offerings in our portfolio,” it said.
Cell C is currently running a free WhatsApp promotion, which lets subscribers use the messaging aspect of the service without incurring data charges.
While WhatsApp voice calling is not free, it is still popular among users on the platform.
While some operators have raised concerns over the potential impact of WhatsApp voice calling on their revenues, Cell C is embracing it.
“These innovative technologies need to be embraced as more affordable communication options for the consumer, something which Cell C welcomes.”
“While there is an accelerated shift of voice traffic from traditional circuit-switch to VoIP, this innovation provides operators with alternative revenue streams.”
Cell C said its current trends show that WhatsApp voice calling does not have an impact on voice revenues.
“These technologies have become a reality for operators internationally. Innovations that bring cheaper communications to consumers must be supported and operators have to accept this.”
