iPhone 4 Reception issues

Apple launched its new iPhone in five countries yesterday and reports are already streaming in of problems with the device.

According to Engadget when a user queried the issue with Apple CEO Steve Jobs his simple reply was, “Just avoid holding it in that way.”

The official statement from Apple according to multiple sources is: “Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”

User response has been varied. Some users have pointed out that there have been similar issues reported on other mobile phones. Others have indicated that Apple’s own marketing material depicts people holding the phone in the sub-optimal position and argue that the most natural way to hold the phone shouldn’t potentially cause it to disconnect from the network.
