A 44-year-old man appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Monday after allegedly stealing batteries from a cellphone signal tower near the N12.
In a statement, police spokesperson Lieutenant Olebogeng Tawana said the Kimberley Flying Squad was tipped off about the incident on Koppie Enkel just outside Kimberley on Friday.
“On arrival, the police spotted a red double cab Toyota bakkie, which sped off as soon as its occupants noticed the police were on their trail.
“A high speed chase ensued… and two of the suspects fled the scene on foot [while] one suspect was arrested.”
Eleven cellphone signal tower batteries were found loaded in the back of the bakkie and 13 batteries were found on the back seat.
Tawana estimated the value of the batteries recovered to be R1m.
The suspect was charged with possession of suspected stolen goods.
