MTN explains “first with 12-month data bundles” claim
MTN recently launched its Data4Keeps promotion, offering data bundles that are valid for 365 days to 100,000 prepaid and 100,000 contract subscribers.
The promotion is set to end on 31 January 2016.
In its marketing for the promotion, MTN claimed it was the first operator in South Africa to offer data bundles that are valid for 12-months.
This is a curious claim, considering Telkom offered such data bundles as early as 2012 – with its 60+60GB promotion for R1,800.
Cell C also has data bundles that are valid for 12 months, which it calls Giga 100 and Giga 200.
Giga 200 offers 50GB of anytime data and 150GB of midnight data for R1,799, while Giga 100 offers 100GB of anytime data for R2,499.
MTN responds
MTN said it is the only operator in South Africa that offers opted-in subscribers the flexibility to buy data bundles that have a 12-month validity period, at denominations they offer.
“This is the only proposition that protects the customer who purchases lower denominations of data, who doesn’t get to use it within the standard validity period that is currently being provided in the industry,” said MTN.
It highlighted that the pricing on the Data4Keeps bundles is similar to that offered on its normal monthly bundles which have a 30-day validity.
“None of our competitors have a similar offer as far as we know.”

To qualify for the data bundles, subscribers have to switch to the new Data4Keeps price plan.
This may result in your out-of-bundle voice, data, or SMS tariffs changing.
The tariffs of the prepaid Data4Keeps price plan are as follows:
- Voice: R0.99 per minute, billed per second.
- Data: R0.99 per MB.
- SMS: R0.50 per message.
On contract, the Data4Keeps price plan is:
- Subscription fee: R69 per month.
- Inclusive value: 500MB data per month.
- Voice: R1.20 per minute, billed per second.
- Data: R0.99 per MB.
- SMS: R0.50 per message.
