Over 4.45 billion GSM, WCDMA-HSPA subscriptions

The Global mobile Suppliers association (GSA) today announced that the number of GSM subscriptions (including WCDMA-HSPA) reached important new milestones during Q2 2010 according to its analysis.

Some of the highlights of its latest research include:

1. World market share of GSM subscriptions (including WCDMA-HSPA) now stands at almost 90% of all mobile technologies
2. China has now passed 700 million GSM (including WCDMA-HSPA) subscriptions
3. India has now passed 500 million GSM (including WCDMA-HSPA) subscriptions
4. The APAC region has passed the 2 billion GSM (including WCDMA-HSPA) subscriptions milestone
5. Central and Latin America and the Caribbean region has passed 500 million GSM (including WCDMA-HSPA) subscriptions

Key Facts from latest GSA surveys and reports:

1. 503 GSM/EDGE network commitments in 195 countries; 487 networks launched in 190 countries (GSA survey: February 1, 2010)
2. 3G/WCDMA: 357 operators launched in 148 countries (GSA survey: June 30, 2010)
3. 98.8% of commercial WCDMA operators also launched HSPA
4. 401 HSPA operator commitments in 154 countries (GSA survey: June 30, 2010)
5. 353 HSPA operators commercially launched in 147 countries
6. 18 UMTS900 i.e. HSPA900 networks commercially launched (GSA survey: July 12, 2010)
7. 288 HSDPA networks have launched 3.6 Mbps (peak) downlink service or higher = 81.5% of commercial HSDPA operators (GSA)
8. 205 commercial HSDPA networks, i.e 58%, support 7.2 Mbps (peak) or higher (GSA)
9. 116 HSPA+ network commitments in 54 countries (GSA survey: June 30, 2010)
10. 63 HSPA+ networks have entered commercial service in 35 countries
11. 50 HSPA+ devices launched in the market (GSA survey, July 12, 2010)
12. 2,579 HSDPA devices launched by 235 suppliers (GSA survey, July 12, 2010)
13. 1,893 devices support 3.6 Mbps peak or higher (excl. notebooks, e-book readers)
14. 1,158 devices support 7.2 Mbps peak or higher (excl. notebooks, e-book readers)
15. 118 HSUPA networks launched in 60 countries, plus another 8 network commitments/deployments (GSA survey: June 30, 2010)
16. 724 HSUPA devices launched (excl. notebooks, e-book readers)
17. 1,957 HSPA devices (93%) operate in 2100 MHz band (excl. notebooks, e-book readers)
18. 940 HSPA devices operate in 850 MHz band (excl. notebooks, e-book readers)
19. 690 tri-band HSPA devices 850/1900/2100 MHz (excl. notebooks, e-book readers)
20. 401 HSPA devices operate in 900 MHz band (UMTS900) (excl. notebooks, e-book readers)
21. 735 HSPA devices incorporate 802.11 WiFi (excl. notebooks, e-book readers)
22. 663 HSPA devices incorporate GPS/positioning functionality
23. 279 of 401 HSPA network operator commitments (70%) also committed to EDGE
24. Around 83% of HSDPA devices also support GSM/EDGE
25. 80 LTE network commitments in 31 countries (GSA survey: June 7, 2010)
26. Up to 22 LTE networks expected to be in commercial service by end 2010
27. At least 45 LTE networks expected to be in commercial service by end 2012
28. Over 2.5 billion GSM, WCDMA and HSPA subscriptions in commercial HSPA-enabled networks worldwide
