Optimus One and Optimus Chic: Two new Android smartphones from LG
Shortly after announcing that LG would be bringing the dated Optimus GT540 to South Africa, LG officially announced their two brand new Optimus phones, the Optimus One and Optimus Chic.
While the GT540 is still running on Android 1.6 (Donut), the One and Chic will run Android 2.2 (FroYo). Most new Android phones currently run version 2.1 (Éclair) of Google’s mobile operating system.
According to LG, FroYo offers the following improvements over Éclair:
1. A speed increase of 2-3 times that of Éclair
2. Improved search features
3. Improved security features (such as remote wipe)
4. Devices can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot
5. Improved storage card handling
President and CEO of LG Electronics, Skott Ahn, was asked to provide his forecast of the smartphone market.
“Android will become the dominant platform,” Ahn said. He added that performance will be critical and processor speed a key differentiator.
LG South Africa has said that they plan to launch the Optimus One during November 2010 and bring the Chic to South Africa next year.
This confirms that the other Android smartphone LG planned to bring to South Africa before the end of the year is indeed the Optimus One.
LG couldn’t confirm the local recommended retail pricing for the devices.
