Tariffic has released a report on what South African consumers look for in a cellphone deal, and which networks they love and hate the most.
The bill optimization company said thousands of South Africans have used its site since it launched in March, which has provided insight into what local consumers think of the mobile operators and their deals.
Looking for best deal
Tariffic said 53% of users searched for deals across all four mobile networks, indicating that the majority are interested in the best deal and not set on a particular network.
The graph below details the search behaviour of the first 7,000 users on the site.
Vodacom most loved, and most hated
When consumers selected which networks to include or exclude from their search results, Vodacom stood out in both categories.
“17% of customers were only interested in Vodacom, while 21% don’t want to see results from Vodacom at all. This is a fairly high number, showing consumers have either a love or hate relationship with Vodacom,” said Tariffic.
MTN came in second, at 8% and 12% respectively, followed by Cell C, and then Telkom.
Total market share – Vodacom and MTN on top
Of all users, 82% wanted to view contracts from MTN and Vodacom combined, said Tariffic.
Only 9% didn’t want a contract from either or both of the big two operators, said the company.
