Android upgrade for the Sony Ericsson X10 range – now available
Sony Ericsson announced on Monday that the much anticipated upgrade to Android 2.1 “Éclair” is now available for South African X10 handset owners.
The range of X10 Android smartphones was launched in South Africa earlier this year and comprises of the Xperia X10, X10 Mini, and X10 Mini Pro.
The X10 is Sony’s high-end Android device, sporting a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 4” 480×854 TFT capacitive touch display, 384 MB RAM and 1 GB internal flash storage.
Both the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro feature a somewhat lower spec’d 600 MHz Qualcomm processor, 256MB RAM, and a 2.6” 240×320 TFT capacitive touch display.
All three versions of Sony Ericsson’s X10 range shipped with version 1.6 (Donut) of Google’s Android operating system.
Users of the devices (who haven’t just rooted their phones and loaded a custom ROM by now) have been chomping at the bit to receive an update to the newer versions of Android.
Among other things the upgrade provides the handsets with improved Bluetooth functionality and automatic synchronization of contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book. Sony Ericsson also promised an improvement in how pictures, audio, text and numbers in messages are handled.
Sonja Shear, Sony Ericsson’s market unit head said that they couldn’t comment on whether the X10 range would be receiving upgrades to Android 2.2 “FroYo,” unfortunately.
