Nokia to support syncing to Google apps?

Nokia is working on natively supporting remote synchronisation to third party organiser services such as those provided by Google, said Felix Petersen, Director of product strategy for the Ovi experience at Nokia.

Petersen wasn’t specific about when the feature would be launched, if at all, but indicated that it is something Nokia was paying attention to.

Many Android handset owners have become accustomed to synchronising their contacts and calendar information to Google Contacts and Google Calendar entirely over the air. This feature has typically only been available with enterprise services, such as those that support SyncML (e.g. Novell Groupwise) and Microsoft Exchange.

Handsets from Nokia that run the Symbian mobile operating system usually support both Microsoft Exchange and SyncML, but haven’t supported Google’s organiser services. Thanks to a helper service provided by the search giant called Google Sync, Symbian users can at least remotely synchronise their Google Contacts and default Google Calendar to their devices.

Petersen also revealed that the integration with Google would probably not run through Nokia’s Ovi services. He said that they don’t want to lock users in as well as ensure that the feature works well.

“If you’re using Google we’re not going to force you to use Ovi,” Petersen said.

Nokia is going to play nice with all the cloud services relevant to smartphones, according to Petersen.
