Following its calculation of the best and worst cellphone contract cancellation fees in South Africa, Tariffic has revealed how mobile operators calculate the outstanding amounts owed on smartphone contracts.
“The amount you’ll pay to cancel your cellphone contract before it expires is based on numerous factors and varies from service provider to service provider,” said Tariffic.
The calculations Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, and Telkom use are detailed in the graphic below, and are based on “reverse engineering cancellation quotes”, said Tariffic.
If a contract holder requests a cancellation from an operator, they will first receive a cancellation quote.
“If you choose to go ahead with the cancellation, you will have to make the payment for the cancellation fee, via EFT, and send proof of payment to your service provider.”
Tariffic advised consumers to always double-check their cancellation quotes before paying.
