Telkom LTE problems

Telkom LTE users have complained of high latency during peak times on the operator’s network over the past several weeks.

MyBroadband readers and members of the Telkom Community page stated that the problems started around the beginning of July.

MyBroadband also received email complaints from users in Durban and Port Elizabeth.

The latency issues appear to be nationwide, and are most common during peak times on Telkom’s network – particularly between 19:00 – 21:00.

A number of users posted speed test and online gaming statistics which showed their latency increasing from below 50ms to over 200ms in the evening.

Several users said their latency peaked between 500ms to 1,000ms when the problem was at its worst.

Telkom LTE users have also complained of slow download speeds, with one user’s speed test showing his usual download rates of 90Mbps dropping to around 3Mbps during peak times.

Telkom gives more customers access to LTE

On 15 June, Telkom revealed it was refarming parts of its network to make room for improved LTE access.

Originally, Telkom’s LTE and LTE-Advanced network was deployed in a configuration known as time-division duplex, on unused spectrum in the 2,300MHz band.

Telkom started rolling out its LTE network on its 1,800MHz spectrum, which allowed for more devices to connect and provided better in-building penetration.

Telkom’s users have speculated that the move has caused congestion on its network, while others state the operator is suffering from a lack of backhaul capacity.

Telkom was asked for comment on the matter, but did not respond.
