MTN and Vodacom evaluating spectrum auction offer
MTN and Vodacom have welcomed the “progress made by ICASA” in terms of making frequency spectrum available.
MTN and Vodacom made the announcement following ICASA’s decision to issue an invitation to operators to apply for high-demand spectrum.
Radio frequency spectrum from the complimentary bands IMT700, IMT800, and IMT2600 form part of the invitation to apply.
“MTN is currently evaluating the ITA as published to understand the requirements for participation as well as the terms and conditions of the auction process,” said MTN.
“Ultimately, the licensing of frequency spectrum will benefit consumers who are demanding better quality and higher speeds as it will allow operators to more rapidly roll out advanced broadband services.”
MTN is currently densifying its network by rolling out more base stations and refarming its existing spectrum to support LTE technology, it said.
Vodacom considering application
Vodacom said it is considering the contents of the invitation to apply, and will “make further comments in due course”.
“At first sight, the invitation to apply includes some tough asks such as speeds that need to be attained across SA by 2020,” said Vodacom.
“Having said that, it is clear that the smart intent on this front is to drive continuous investment into infrastructure.”
