No price war with Telkom: MTN SA CEO

MTN South Africa CEO Mteto Nyati said they are not interested in getting into a price war with Telkom, following the launch of its FreeMe products.
Telkom launched its data-centric FreeMe contract packages in July, which offer aggressive prices and simplify its product offering.
According to Tarrific, Telkom’s FreeMe packages are the top choice for high data and voice users in South Africa.
Nyati is not impressed with Telkom’s new offering, though. Speaking to Business Day TV, he said they have analysed it, understand it, and know how limited it is.
He said Telkom received great exposure with its new products, which is “interesting”, but that it is not that great.
“We are talking about activations which are SIM-only, where the rest of the big market is activations which are SIM and handsets,” he said.
He said that while MTN will focus on data in future, they will not be involved in a “race to the bottom”.
