Sony Ericsson arc Android Gingerbread smartphone coming to SA

Sony Ericsson unveiled the new Xperia arc smartphone at CES today. It is set to run on the latest version of the Android platform, version 2.3 or “Gingerbread.”

Xperia arc is the first of a new generation of Xperia smartphones to be announced in 2011.

Sonja Shear, Market Unit Head at Sony Ericsson South Africa said, “Xperia arc combines state-of-the-art Sony technology with breath taking design to entertain and wow consumers. All on the latest Android release.”

The Xperia arc is 8.7mm at its thinnest part and has a 4.2” multi-touch screen.

Sony has dubbed the screen the “Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine” and promises that it will deliver visual brilliance and a crystal clear image.

Furthermore, the 8.1 megapixel camera will include Sony’s Exmor R for mobile sensor with a f/2.4 lens which they say will enable the capture of high quality, bright pictures and HD videos even in low light.

The device will also sport an HDMI connector so that captured videos and images can be shared in HD on monitors and TVs that support the standard.

Everything one would expect from Android is included in the use of the latest release of Google’s popular mobile operating system, such as Google Mobile Services and Android Market.

Sony Ericsson SA couldn’t provide a recommended retail price for the device, but said that the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc is expected to be available in SA from Q2 2011.
