Vodacom’s new Plus packages take on Telkom FreeMe

Vodacom launched its Smart+ and RED+ price plans on 1 August, with prices valid until 31 January 2017.

Cellphone bill-optimisation company Tariffic stated that the new packages are intended to compete with Telkom’s FreeMe offering – which features data-centric deals at competitive prices.

The new Vodacom packages offer more data than their non “Plus” versions for a slightly higher price, while dropping the number of SMS messages and maintaining the voice minute total.

For example: a Smart S package gives you the following for R209.

  • 200MB
  • 200 SMS
  • 75 minutes

A Smart S+ package gives users the following for R249.

  • 500MB
  • 75 SMS
  • 75 minutes

“The prices you’ll pay for this extra data work out cheaper compared to the cost of adding a separate data bundle to your existing contract,” said Tariffic.

“However, the cost saving only becomes significant with the more expensive RED packages.”

“Vodacom’s new Plus packages prove that they aren’t oblivious to the turning of the tide when it comes to how cellular consumers are using their phones,” said Tariffic.

The new packages are detailed below.
