Ovi Music Unlimited to be shut down in 27 countries

According to a report by Reuters, Nokia is to shut down its Ovi Music Unlimited service in 27 countries.

China, India and Indonesia will continue to receive phones bundled with 12-month subscriptions while six-month subscriptions are to be bundled with devices in Brazil, Turkey and South Africa.

Nokia’s Ovi Music Unlimited service allowed subscribers to download any amount of music from their Ovi Music store, albeit locked with Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology.

This DRM prevents you from playing the music on anything but a specifically authorised PC or device, similar to Apple’s iTunes service.

The service is being shut down because it lacked operator support and failed to attract many customers, the report said.

Those countries where Ovi Music Unlimited is to be discontinued will have access to the service until their existing subscriptions expire, Reuters reported.
