SMS billing or spam problems?

Many South African cellular subscribers have been frustrated by SMS spam and incorrect billing from cellular content providers. However, there is hope.

South Africa’s Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association (WASPA) recently announced that the vast majority of the consumer complaints about its members handled last year has been amicably resolved.

According to WASPA its adjudicators ruled on 232 complaints during the course of 2010 of which 165 complaints were upheld, 23 were partially upheld and 44 were dismissed.

The majority of these complaints were related to billing for services the customer no longer wants or claims not to have signed up for in the first place.

Many of the complaints which were upheld resulted in penalties, including hefty fines which were imposed on some offenders.

WASPA also pro-actively monitors service providers. The organization employs two staff members specifically to monitor and test services and sniff out offending wireless application providers.

“Repeat offenders have services terminated, and in some cases WASPA requests the mobile networks to suspend their services entirely,” WASPA said.

If you have a problem with a wireless application service provider engaging in unsolicited SMSs or incorrect billing, you can lodge a complaint with WASPA.
