This graph shows how mobile data is killing voice
Akamai has released its Q2 2016 State of the Internet report, which shows a massive increase in mobile data traffic over the last few years.
The Akamai report uses insight from mobile vendor Ericsson, which has a presence in more than 180 countries and a customer base representing more than 1,000 networks.
The result is a base for calculating world total mobile traffic on 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.
Mobile data traffic has continued to show strong growth, driven by increased smartphone subscriptions and a continued increase in average data volumes per subscription.
Video content was the biggest driver of higher average data use by mobile subscribers.
In the second quarter of 2016, data traffic grew 11% quarter over quarter and 55% year over year.
Looking at a five-year period, cumulative voice-traffic growth was 42%, while cumulative data-traffic growth was just over 1,600%.
