BlackBerry Bold 9780 SA launch details
Cell C have revealed their plans for the new BlackBerry Bold 9780, which was announced by Research in Motion (RIM) last year.
The most prominent improvements to the BlackBerry Bold 9780 is the 5-megapixel camera and the use of the latest version of the BlackBerry operating system (OS).
BlackBerry OS 6 has been promised for the Bold 9700 and a number of operators around the world have begun making such an upgrade available, but it isn’t officially available for South African BlackBerry Bold 9700 users yet.
While details about the upgrade to BlackBerry OS 6 are scant, Cell C have revealed that they plan on launching the BlackBerry Bold 9780 in March with a retail of price of between R4999 and R5299.
The third network operator said that they aren’t planning special packages for the handset, but that it will slot into existing tariffs in-line with the current BlackBerry Bold.
Vodacom was only willing to confirm that they will be launching the BlackBerry Bold 9780 “shortly” and that it will be “aggressively priced.”
MTN didn’t comment by the time of publication.
As for the delay, Cell C said that there were a few variables that affected the launch of the device but that there was no specific reason it was delayed.
Vodacom said that the global launch schedules are determined by Research in Motion and that only they could say if there are specific obstacles to launching the device in South Africa.
“We work closely with our carrier partners to make all of our latest devices available,” said RIM South Africa. “When a new product is ready to be launched with one of our carrier partners we will issue a joint press release announcing the launch of the new product.”
