#DataMustFall leader gets free data for his app

MTN will let subscribers stream Touch Central for free between 18:00 and 20:00 on weekdays.
MTN said that data used by the Touch Central app would be zero-rated as part of its #MyNightShift campaign.
Touch Central is the streaming radio station run by Thabo “Tbo Touch” Molefe, who started the #DataMustFall campaign in September.
“All Networks have 30 days to make a change! We will all move our subscriptions to the network that cares about its customers #datamustfall,” Molefe said on Twitter.
He was invited to Parliament, where he told the portfolio committee on telecommunications and postal services that data prices in South Africa are daylight robbery.
Data did not have to be free, but it had to be affordable, said Molefe.
Molefe called on network operators to halve the price of data. “It’s possible, unless they want to still have nice packages and bonuses and go abroad come festive season,” he said.
He told the committee that networks in other countries were paying companies like Touch Central to come up with apps like theirs.
“Networks should be paying us. They know between 06:00 and 09:00, there is a guy who has 1.4 million followers on Twitter. All this money goes to networks. They control the streaming between us, the content providers, and our listeners, and we don’t even charge them.”
