MTN Sh@relink replacement on the way
MTN revealed at a press event held in Johannesburg that they will be launching a new 3G Wi-Fi gateway to replace the current Sh@relink device offered by the operator.
According to MTN the current Sh@relink, a branded Huawei B970b 3G gateway, will be replaced by the Huawei B660 and B683.
The devices will still be called “Sh@relink” and MTN said that they didn’t foresee an increase in price from the old Huawei B970 gateway to the new B660 and B683 gateways.
While the B660 still supports download speeds of 7.2 Mbps, MTN said that the Huawei B683 device is able to support 21.1 megabit per second (Mbps) HSPA+ speeds. This will allow the device to take advantage of their the yellow network’s 21 Mbps capabilities.
Lambo Kanagaratnam, CTO of MTN South Africa, told MyBroadband in January that MTN’s whole network is capable of speeds up to 21 Mbps, but that transmission capacity constraints are hampering the rollout of these higher speeds across its network.
Kanagaratnam said that MTN had around 150 towers, mainly in metropolitan areas, with sufficient transmission capacity on fibre to support HSPA+ connections.
In a more recent statement, Kanagaratnam said that MTN hopes to achieve a five fold increase in the number of sites with sufficient fibre capacity.
