“Stay out of the Red” warns Cell C
Vodacom unveiled its new red branding last week which CEO Pieter Uys said is merely the tip of the iceberg.
“This isn’t a once-off change, it’s a journey and I’m confident that as the weeks and months unfold, you’ll find the changes run much deeper than simply turning from blue to red,” said Uys.
Vodacom is investing heavily in its new Vodafone centric brand, adapting the slogan ‘Power to You” and spending millions in advertising to introduce its new image to consumers.
Vodacom is also using payoff lines like “Red is switched on”, “Red is more”, “Red is faster” and “Discover possibilities with red”, but Cell has a bit of a different view on the colour red.
On Monday Cell C CEO Lars Reichelt also joked on Twitter that “I’d rather be in the black than in the red… since Friday that feeling is particularly strong ;-)”.
The company is also running an advertising campaign on Google poking fun at Vodacom’s new red branding.
In one of its Google text adverts Cell C informs readers that “Red means Stop”, and urges them to “Rather keep browsing with Cell C at only R299pm for 5GB a month”.

In another ad Cell C warns users to “Stay out of the Red – With Cell C’s affordable data deals at only R149pm for 2GB a month”.

Yet another advertisement titled “Are you seeing Red” advises consumers to “Get Cell C’s super fast internet for only R149pm for 2GB a month”.

It is interesting to note that Cell C’s ‘red’ search advertising is running alongside Vodacom’s own advertisements punting their new brand.
To view these Cell C advertisements, simply search for ‘Vodacom Red’ in Google.
