Real world 43Mbps HSPA+ speeds
Cell C officially launched its 42 Mbps HSPA+ services in Port Elizabeth on 19 April, with plans to extend their HSPA+ network upgrades in a phased approach.
The Cell C launch came only four days after Vodacom announced that they have exceeded 1,000 active 43.2 Mbps HSPA+ sites on their network.
But what real world speeds can consumers actually expect using a 42Mbps HSPA+ network?
Vodacom CTO Andries Delport explains that while peak rates of over 40Mbps are achievable in laboratory conditions, many factors influence the real world performance on a 43Mbps HSPA+ service like the distance from the tower, whether you are connecting indoors and even weather conditions.
Delport said that subscribers can expect an average speed of 7.8Mbps while users on the edge of a cell will only see speeds of around 3Mbps.
Both Cell C CEO Lars Reichelt and Vodacom CEO Pieter Uys said that the aim of the higher network speeds is not really to boost peak speeds, but rather to increase capacity to increase the average performance on their broadband networks.
