MTN has released its financial results for the year ended 31 December 2016.
The network stated it has increased group subscriber numbers by 3.3% to 240.4 million.
Other highlights for the company included:
- An increase in revenue of 0.4% to R146.8 billion.
- An increase in data revenue of 16.7% to R39.5 billion.
- An increase in data traffic of 143%.
Voice traffic was down by 1.7%, while EBITDA decreased by 13.2% to R51.9 billion.
“Capex increased by 19.6% to R34.9 billion,” said MTN.

“As previously reported, MTN South Africa delivered a sub-optimal result in the first six months of 2016, with network, systems, and customer service challenges,” said MTN.
“While all these issues were not fully resolved during the second half of 2016, MTN South Africa showed strong improvements in network quality and capacity.”
The company said is has significantly improved its net promoter score – “particularly in the fourth quarter where it increased its NPS by 8 percentage points to 81%”.
MTN South Africa’s EBITDA in the second half of the year increased by 31.0% (excluding the MTN Zakhele Futhi share-based payment expense) compared to the first six months of the year.
